Pick of the week: “Blancanieves”: My full review is here. This sumptuous Spanish film reimagines the Snow White legend as a silent black-and-white film set in the world of toreadors. If you liked “The Artist,” you’ll love this.
Comedy of the week: “The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai”: Although I’m not sure “comedy” quite qualifies as this 1984 cult classic plays it so daffily straight, as a rock-star scientist superhero assembles his crack team to save the planet from an extra-dimensional threat.
Drama of the week: “Flight”: My full review is here. Denzel Washington gives one of his best and most vulnerable performances as a heroic airline pilot trying to hide his alcoholism from the world.
Sci-fi film of the week: “Silent Running”: Bruce Dern plays an ecologist tasked with caring for Earth’s last remnants of nature, now floating in space, in this exciting and thoughtful 1972 film.
Foreign film of the week: “This is Not a Film”: My full review is here. Held under house arrest and forbidden to make movies, Iranian filmmaker Jafar Panahi films himself waiting for the final verdict, sketching out scenes for a movie he may never get the chance to make, and watching riots in the streets of Tehran in this film that’s as much an act of resistance as a documentary.
