“The Adderall Diaries”: A million little pieces of plot that never add up


“The Adderall Diaries” opens Friday at AMC Fitchburg. R, 1:45, one and a half stars out of four.

Stephen Elliott’s “The Adderall Diaries” would be a beast of a book for any filmmaker to try to adapt. The hazy brew of addiction memoir and true-crime nonfiction may have worked well on the page, but writer-director Pamela Romanowsky’s confused and easily distracted film feels like several first acts jammed together with nowhere to go.

“Run All Night”: Liam Neeson makes the mean streets a little meaner

“Run All Night” is now playing at Point, Eastgate and Star Cinemas. R, 1:55, three stars out of four.

At this point, the question is not whether Liam Neeson will kick ass, but what sort of ass he will kick. Albanian ass, as in “Taken”? German ass, as in “Unknown”? Midair ass, as in “Non-Stop”?

Or Irish-American ass, as in his latest action thriller “Run All Night,” although “Run” takes some pains to worry about things like acting, characterization and texture. Why, it’s almost a full hour before the first ass gets kicked.

“The Face of Love”: How can two Ed Harrises be such a bad thing?

“The Face of Love” opens Friday at Sundance Cinemas. PG-13, 1;32, two stars out of four.

It would seem that all you would have to do is point a camera at Annette Bening and Ed Harris and you’d have yourself a movie. Both actors seem incapable of seeming inauthentic on screen — Harris has been a charimsatic character actor for 30 years now, while Bening creates satisfyingly complex women nearly every time she’s on screen. Just put them at a dinner table, give them something to say, and they’re off.
