Pick of the week: “20,00o Days on Earth“ (Amazon Prime) — My full review is here. Nick Cave’s baroque fictionalized documentary mixes the mythos and the man to create a film that both celebrates his larger-than-life and provides surprising insight into his creative process.
“Mood Indigo” (Amazon Prime) — Michel Gondry (“Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind”) overdoses on whimsy in this French fable about a fizzy couple (Audrey Tautou and Romain Duris) whose love is tested when she contracts a rare illness. Gondry’s obsession with playful surrealism is grating to some, but there’s no denying his visual imagination.
“Air Force One” (Amazon Prime) — Harrison Ford’s last truly kick-ass role is “Die Hard with POTUS” as Ford plays a President who fights terrorists who have seized his plane in midair.
“Tootsie” (Amazon Prime) — One of the funniest comedies of the ’80s features Dustin Hoffman as an arrogant actor who takes a role on a soap opera — as a middle-aged actress — only to find the commercial success he never could get in his own clothes.
“Mr. Peabody and Sherman” (Netflix) — This could have been a travesty, but this CGI reboot of the old cartoon from the “Rocky & Bullwinkle Show” is pretty faithful to its roots, with Ty Burrell making a darn good Mr. Peabody, bad puns and all.
