Pick of the Week: “House of Flying Daggers“ (Netflix) — Chinese director Zhang Yimou’s follow-up to the martial arts epic “Hero” is one of the most visually gorgeous action films ever made, from a fight in a bamboo forest to a climactic duel in the middle of a snowstorm.
“We Need To Talk About Kevin” (Amazon Prime) — File this one under “great films I’ll never watch twice,” Lynne Ramsay’s disturbing and powerful horror-drama about a harried mother (Tilda Swinton) who is the only one who can see the growing malevolence of her teenage son (Ezra Miller), until it’s too late.
“Goldfinger” (Netflix Instant) — A few James Bond movies popped up on Netflix this month, including the granddaddy of them all.
“Mission: Impossible” (Netflix Instant) — Brian DePalma’s 1996 installment of the Tom Cruise spy franchise has some classic action setpieces (such as the dead-quiet CIA break-in), but I’ll always love the way it gleefully trashes the legacy of the original TV series.
“Thief” (Netflix Instant) — Michael Mann’s cool 1981 thriller is a classic of the genre, with James Caan as a methodical Chicago jewel thief who gets entangled with some nasty customers.
